Capsule Wardrobe Staples: Fall 2022

It's that time of year again when I transition my wardrobe from spring and summer back over to fall and winter. While pulling out all of my long sleeves and cozy sweaters I realized there is one particular sweater I've had for around 8 years now that I am still in love with to this day. In today's world of fast fashion that seems like an eternity to own something, but in reality, if we are making smart buying choices, it should be the norm (and for even longer than that)!

I started to think about why I've had this sweater so long compared to others that have come and gone. The answer: it's a classic-cut, gray turtleneck sweater that never goes out of style and I can wear it hundreds of different ways. Year after year this sweater comes through for me and I feel great in it. This fact motivated me to make smarter decisions while shopping this fall and buying things that I could see myself loving for years to come.

As someone who is a recovering trend addict, it's still hard for me to not want to hop on every trend I see. However, I've realized over time how unsustainable this is to the planet and my wallet. So, here are some items that I have been wanting to add to my wardrobe this fall that I believe would be a smart addition to my closet and yours too. (All of these things could easily be bought second-hand).

Trench Coat

Doesn't matter what you have on underneath, throw one on and you're guaranteed to look chic.

Loafers

Loafers are so versatile because you can wear them if you're trying to be casual or dressed up. This year I am trying to stay away from the lug sole and platform styles because I don't know how much longer the trend will stick around. Instead, I am going for a more timeless, classic style.

Fun fact: According to NPD Group, loafer and dress shoe sales are on the rise and sneaker sales are on the decline.

Oversized Bags

The slouchier the better.

The trend cycle constantly takes us from small shoulder bags to oversized bags and back around again. Basically, keep everything cause you never know when it will come back in style.

Right now, I'm loving the shift to oversized bags because you can throw literally everything you own in there. Sometimes my small purse couldn't even hold my phone!
